Setting Up Your Raw Food Kitchen
A Raw food kitchen differs from the normal setup. Here we’ve put together products and appliances that will be beneficial to making preparations easier. I believe the top four are absolute essentials but the rest can make your job much easier and fun.
#1 POWERFUL BLENDER!
This is the one item you MUST have in your raw food kitchen! Sure, you can go to your local crap-mart and pick one up for $20 but investing in a powerful high quality blender can save you loads of blending time, aggravation and money from throwing out those cheap ones so often. This is the most used tool for preparing raw foods like smoothies, dressings, soups, milks, and almost anything else. I’ve used a variety of types and found the K-Tec to be the best, most powerful and easiest to use.
#2 FOOD PROCESSOR
A good quality large capacity food processor can make preparations easier. Use for mixing pate’, grinding nuts, concocting new mixtures and making gourmet foods. Also comes with a slicer, dicer and more to cut up veggies. I use a Cusinart 14 cup and am happy with it’s performance.
#3 KNIVES
You will need some great quality heavy duty sharp knives. Get several paring knives, a butcher knife, a chopping knife, a chef’s knife and I love my meat cleaver for large melons and young coconuts. Keep your knives sharp or buy ceramic knives which always stay sharp.
#4 WOODEN CUTTING BOARD
Get either one big one or a few small ones so you can accommodate many veggies. Some plastic ones can be toxic so opt for wood instead.
#5 MIXER
I burnt up a few of the cheap ones trying to get things mixed before switching to a good quality machine. I use a Kitchen Aid now, which I’ve found to be very beneficial when making brownies and other gooey items. It also comes with several beater choices for whipping up various things.
#6 JUICER
I don’t drink juice much anymore without the pulp, but in season I love fresh apple juice and fruit icecreams. I use a Champion and wouldn’t own any other type of juicer because this powerful machine can do just what I need and makes it easy. Beware of cheap juicers that get to hot or just spin as they don’t work correctly or get out all the juice.
#7 CITRUS JUICER
For small jobs, pick up a glass manual citrus juicer for your raw food kitchen. I enjoy my antique one for doing quick juices for recipes. If you want to make a batch of orange juice, get an electric citrus juicer. You can find these cheap for plastic ones, or better yet invest a little more cash and get stainless steel.
#8 MANDOLINE
This is a nifty tool that can make slicing very thin or crinkle cuts very easy. I like using this to slice dikons and other root vegetables for gourmet delights. I’ve seen really cheap plastic ones that I’d steer clear of as well you can spend several hundred dollars for professional versions. I think my moderate priced stainless steel Cusinart does the job just fine.
#9 VEGGIE SPIRALIZER
Enhance salads and make veggie pastas with this handy dandy tool. These go for about $30 . Order from Living Nutrition.
#10 DEHYDRATOR
A dehydrator isn’t necessary, however, it can be very helpful. I recommend the Excalibur. You can make travel foods, gourmet crackers & breads and use it to dehydrate your leftover cilantro or fruit and gourmet goodies. Use sparingly, as fresh raw foods are best for health.
#11 SALAD SPINNER
These are a great addition to every raw food kitchen. These work great to take the excess dirt off any type of greens.
#12 COFFEE GRINDER
An average coffee grinder can be used for grinding flax seeds and other nuts into flour. If you plan on using a lot, it’s best to get a flour mill.
