Raw Food For Dogs
What to feed Fido and Rover? Raw food for dogs is by far the best natural diet. Dogs don’t know how to cook, so why would we cook for them and deplete the food of nutrients? We’ve discussed the problems associated with commercial pet foods, now let’s find out what they should be eating.
Dogs, unlike humans have short intestinal tracks. Their digestive systems are a straight shot through their body, where as humans are coiled for about thirty feet. Dogs can easily digest meat and that should be the majority of their diet. Dogs also have very sharp teeth meant for ripping and chewing meat. When wild dogs eat, they hunt down their prey and rip it to shreds with their teeth and devour it raw right then so it’s fresh. While it may seem unlikely that we can provide the same situation for our domesticated pets, we can ensure they get the correct meals. Feeding your dog fresh raw meat along with some fruit and veggies is ideal. Dogs might also eat grass, some greens and some fruit such as apples in the wild. It’s important to always make sure your dog has fresh pure water as well. The best meat for your doggie is of course, organic, minimally processed and whole not ground. Buying local is beneficial as well, meat is likely to be fresher and often times your local butcher will have other animal organs available as well as nice meaty bones.
There are raw food diets for dogs like BARF (Biologically appropriate raw food). While this diet may be on the right track, I don’t feel it’s the best option that closest fits nature. When animals eat in the wild, they eat the majority of their prey and chew the bones. BARF diet uses ground bones and patty meats. I believe it’s important for dogs especially to have bones they can eat, not only is it good for them but it’s great for their teeth and building strong jaws. Raw bones, differ from cooked bones in that they don’t splinter and won’t cause damage to insides.
