Implementing Positive Discipline
Parenting can be a difficult job, however using a positive discipline approach helps to guide your child on the right behavior path. It’s important to remember as parents that we must have patience and keep a sense of humor as we watch our little ones react in different situations.
Positive discipline is based on communicating and respecting your child. The best way to start is by being a role model and remembering to speak to your children the way you want them to speak to you. When you use an

approach to raising your babies, you form an early connection which is vital to laying a foundation to responding to your child’s needs. As they grow, this bond is continually nurtured and that in turn creates trust. Once you and your child mutually trust each other, then discipline and obedience become easier. Instead of spanking, shaming or yelling at your child, using a positive approach can make huge impacts on the way our kids perceive us and others. It’s important to find the cause of the problem instead of treating the symptom. Get down to your child’s level, make eye contact, address them by name, state your case being brief and to the point and then have them repeat it back. Tell them why and what you want them to do. Don’t demand but offer them the opportunity to make a choice, using "when" instead of "if". Avoid saying "No", instead try using "stop" for urgent situations or other phrases as they deem appropriate.
When a child misbehaves we need to be understanding and redirect them in a positive manner which encourages self discipline and cooperation. It’s important to nourish a child’s character by asking them to verbalize what they feel and considering their point of view. Teaching your child respect, empathy and limits provides a solid structure for good behavior. Children will often times test those limits, so make sure to stand your ground and expect obedience. The best discipline will not only teach your child right from wrong but will also nurture their self-confidence and problem solving skills. Remember to secure the time to take advantage of every opportunity and make it a teachable moment. Positive discipline fosters well behaved confident adults.
