The Best Household Cleaning Tips
naturally

We’ve searched high and low in order to bring you the best household cleaning tips. Below is a list of natural household cleaning remedies.

Wood furniture
To clean boil a quart of water and steep with two regular tea bags until room temperature. Use tea to wash furniture, then dry with cotton cloth. Removes furniture polish residue and makes it look new again.

To make a natural furniture polish, combine olive oil and lemon juice. Use a cotton cloth to apply.

BBQ Grills
I would recommend not cooking your food, but if you must, here are some hints on cleaning the mess.
Use steel wool and baking soda to clean and remove rust. Also, try using the shiny side of a piece of aluminum foil.

Garage
Pour cat litter on oil spills. Give it time to soak up the oil, then sweep up.

Jewelry
Clean most jewelry with baking soda. To prevent tarnishing of costume jewelry, place a piece of chalk in the drawer where they are stored.

Car
Use castile soap to clean, won’t leave behind residue. WD-40 will clean off bug guts from the paint and grill without damaging them.

Bugs & Pests
Prevention is best. Clean up spills and don’t leave food out.
To get rid of ants, sprinkle borax, chili powder or cornmeal at openings or inside ant hills. Also, spray your counters with vinegar and put bay leaves where you see them enter.
Here’s one I just discovered about fleas… can’t wait to try it! To prevent fleas on your pets, feed them powdered brewer’s yeast by mixing it into their food.
For slugs, se tout a dish of beer, they will be drawn to it and drown. Plant wormwood in your garden to deter them.

Metal Surfaces
Aluminum- To clean use cream of tartar and water.
Gold- Use toothpaste (just don’t use it on your teeth!).
Copper- Boil the item with vinegar and salt. Polish dry. Pewter- Use a salt, vinegar, flour paste. Or, simply rub with cabbage leaves and buff dry. Brass- Use a salt and vinegar solution or lemon juice and baking soda. Silver- Use it often to prevent from tarnishing. Use an aluminum pot or line a pot with aluminum foil, fill with water and a teaspoon salt and baking soda per cup of water and boil. Shiny surfaces, like faucets- Use 100 proof Vodka on a cloth to wipe clean.

Clogged drains
Pour baking soda followed by vinegar, let fizz and set awhile before rinsing with warm water.
For really stubborn drains, use TSP (trisodium phosphate) it may be harmful and toxic if swallowed but is a great alternative to commercial drain cleaners, plus TSP won’t admit any hazardous fumes. TSP can also be used to remove old paint.

Odor control
You already know about baking soda so what else can you do to eliminate odor? My Grandma’s trick for the bathroom- light a match! You can also put vinegar (if you like the smell) or lemon juice in a spray bottle to mist the air. Baking soda can also take the stink out of shoes. Place soda in a sock and stuff inside. A great kitchen air freshener is to take a cotton ball and pour extract (vanilla, cinnamon, almond, etc.) on it and let it sit out to fill the room with the scent.

Stuffed animals
Wash the ones that can be, for others here are some helpful tips. Place stuffed animals in a plastic bag and freeze them overnight to kill anything living on or inside them. You can spray them with vinegar to disinfect then put them in the dryer and let them spin until hot.

Mold & Mildew
We found several of the best household cleaning hints.
1. Use Tea tree oil.
2. Use vinegar and lemon juice.
3. Put a small piece of copper wire in vinegar for a day or two (not to long) then use it to spray on tough spots.

Removing Wax
Use a hairdryer to heat wax, then remove with paper towels. This can also work on carpet, peal up as much wax beforehand as possible, then place paper towel over wax and heat with hairdryer. To remove wax on cloth, place a paper sack underneath and on top of the wax and iron it onto the paper. Make sure the fabric can be ironed. For wax stuck on votive or candle holders, place in the freezer. The wax will shrink and be easy to remove.

When beginning to clean, start high and work down to the floor. Keep all cleaning supplies together in a bucket or basket to make it easy to move to the next room. Dust before vacuuming and don’t forget to clean door frames and the top of the door. It’s much easier to clean a clutter-free home, get organized!
