Natural Bathroom Cleaning Tips

Cleaning the bathroom doesn’t have to be painful. We’ve put together some great bathroom cleaning tips to help make it a breeze. Plus, we use all natural cleaners so you won’t be fumigated as you work.

Bathroom Cleaning Tips:

Suggestions on finishes
Choose white or ivory, colored tubs and sinks are harder to keep clean and show water spots.
Never paint your bathroom green! Green makes your skin look different.
Use semi-gloss paint for easier clean up.
Use an exhaust fan to prevent moisture from building up.
Choose porcelain fixtures over fiberglass, acrylic or synthetic materials.
Purchase washer-less faucets for higher quality and less leaks. Also using a brushed stainless steel or nickel finish will be easier to maintain than shiny finishes.

Specific Bathroom Cleaning Tips:
Toilets
To clean the toilet, pour vinegar inside and use a scrub brush. For difficult hard water stains, turn off the water to the toilet and use a plunger to empty the bowl. Fill it with vinegar above the line and let it set overnight, then scrub. Baking sod can also be used to help remove water deposits. Also, try using a denture tablet and letting it dissolve before scrubbing. Never use automatic toilet bowl cleaners as they contain bleach and other chemicals that are harmful to your health and septic system.

Tubs & Showers
Prevention is the easiest cleaning technique. Use a squeegee to scrape water off of tiles, surrounds and shower doors to prevent spots. Also, using a castile soap instead of bar soaps will keep your shower free from residue. Rinse out your tub after you’ve finished your bath to keep it from getting grimy quickly.

To remove mold and mildew see our household hints section. To clean, use a spray bottle full of a vinegar and water mix and a good scrub brush. I prefer the brushes with long or extending handles. Tubs are much easier to clean after a bath and showers can be cleaned easily while taking one. Borax can be used to remove soap scum build-up. To remove extreme cases of grimy soap scum, use Murphy’s oil soap and rinse thoroughly; also helps to keep scum from building up.

To clean your shower curtain, spray daily with vinegar and water. Nylon and some high quality plastic curtains can easily be machine washed. Use a little salt and lemon juice for washing to remove mildew.

To clean the metal shower door frame, use an old toothbrush with lemon juice.

Sinks & Faucets
Most faucets and sinks can be easily cleaned with vinegar. However, if you have brass or special finish fixtures, you will need to test them before using vinegar to clean them. Vodka or lemons also work great to polish up shiny faucets. For rust stains rub with a paste made from borax and lemon juice.

To unclog drains or find natural air freshners, see our helpful hints.

Glass & Mirrors
Commercial glass cleaners leave a residue, so if you’ve been using these you’ll need to remove the wax. Use vinegar and a little bit of dish soap to remove existing residue. After you’ve cleaned the residue, you can now use a vinegar & water mixture and a cloth or newspaper.
