Organic Plant Disease Control

Use methods of organic plant disease control to help keep your garden lush and free from plaguing diseases. Here are some great tips and formulas for combating ill plants.

It’s easier to solve a problem early on than later when a plant is near death. Take a walk through your garden on a daily basis and check the health of your plants. When cutting back diseased plants, bushes or trees make sure to keep your tools and hands clean to avoid spreading the disease. Crop rotation can also help to keep diseases from occurring. Companion planting can do wonders to help prevent disease. Try planting tomatoes with basil and carrots, cucumbers with radishes or eggplant with beans. Books are available to learn more about companion planting. Mulching with bark, grass clippings or leaves can also help keep moisture in and disease out.

We’ve found some homemade formula mixes to help with those plants already infected.

*Make a tea out of rhubarb leaves, let cool and spray it on infected plants.

*For fungal disease make the following concoction in your blender, strain and spray plants.
Combine garlic, onion, hot peppers, small amount of vegetable oil (to help it stick).

*Make a spray from water and molasses. Plants will absorb it quickly.

*Use a soap spray. Mix 1 cup lavender and one cup sage and bring to a boil. Strain and use ½ cup herb tea mixed with 2 cups water and 1 tsp. Murphy’s oil soap.
